The Mum ride. We all agreed to ride at a "reasonable" pace, but I knew that would eventually dissipate. We had some of the elite riders with us (they wanted a break from there 25mph rides), so we let them pull a lot. We mostly regrouped as people were shelled out the back, except for the last couple of miles where about 10 of us were lining up for the sprint and a few who just couldn't handle the modest 20mph pace for the distance. Once again Heck Hill proved to be decisive and we would have been away with 5 or 6 if we hadn't sat up. I attacked the hill and stayed in contact for about 3/4 of the way and then my legs just collapsed and I had to chase back on the downhill. Luckily they sat up.
I'm packing up the Bianchi today for it's trip to california, so will just do easy rides all week on the fixed and maybe a good blow on the TT bike just for laughs.
The season here in the midwest is starting to wind down. Riding is more mellow, teststerone levels are down. It's a great time of year. Oh yeah, we got wet yesterday. The remains of Hurricane Rita worked its way into Indiana and we got the overflow here in Ohio (it rained all night last night). HilMaster out.

I'm feeling really strong. I love this time of year. The weather is outstanding and your so strong that nothing really fazes you, not wind or hills or squirrely guys in the pack. I can't believe how well I am climbing. A week ago I had no legs because of a super effort 3 days earlier, but I managed to get up the dreaded "Jay's climb" with the group (with a lot of discomfort). After that the ride was a breeze.
I'll ride with Terry today at 14 or 15 and then take Saturday off, then ride a metric on Sunday with the group. Rumor has it that it will be a "talking pace". We'll see. My raft arrived yesterday, so I'll spend some time on the river today.

I stopped posting last year because I thought that I was pretty much over the hill and training didn't make sense, but I seem to be faster than ever, so I'll start it up again.
The Wednesday night ride has been my yardstick. Early in the year I struggled to keep up, but along about Late July or early August I started to stay with the group, and now I am riding with ease. The pace is pretty high at just under 22 mph for 30 miles and I feel that we could do more. We managed 21+ after the HHH ride where we all nearly blew our brains out at 21.5 for 100 miles, coming in at 5:25 total time.
I'm not doing any formal training now. I was doing intervals once a week until a couple of weeks ago, but it's late in the year and time to start mellowing out. I'll ride in California in August and hopefully do some great climbs, then REALLY mellow out when I get back to Ohio late in the month.
I've decided to give up the Minster ride. It's nice to say that you rode with cat 2's, but they are just hurting me too much, and at 63 I don't have the motivation or strength to pull this ride off any more. I can save some gas too by not driving up there once a week. I'll also be doing the fixed gear once a week from now on as a recovery ride, and 2 rides a week with Terry at 14 or 15. That leaves Wednesday and Saturday for fast days and Friday for a rest day.
I got one TT in, a 10 miler. I was surprised that I went as fast as I did (26.39), as I have no clue about what HR to run. I settled in at around 155, but 10 years ago I was doing 170 and I can't have dropped that much. Well, enough for now. Hillmaster out.
